How depressing the title of this post may look but i surely did enjoyed everything which led me to miss longest total solar eclipse of our lifetime. I was told by google news few weeks earlier its going to happen on 22 July and blackout would last for just over 3 minutes, Delhi was not getting anything more than 70% of eclipse so nehru planetarium with 20 Rupee eclipse glasses were not in my spectrum. However we all know only people other than children visiting indian planetarium/ sci-fi centers are the ones accompanying them.
People around me told few things night before the “grahan” that why we should not be stalking sun for those 2 hours, According to hindu mythology “Rahu and Ketu are said to “swallow” the sun during eclipses, snuffing out its life-giving light and causing food to become inedible and water undrinkable.”
Some beliefs i dig through which are widely perceived
1) Its bad for pregnant women as child will be doomed, well i say atleast child would have an excuse “Listen i was born on solar eclipse so don’t blame me if i can’t count above 100″
2) Food prepared before the eclipse must be thrown away.
3) Don’t have to eat during the time of eclipse
4) Take bath after the eclipse and pray to Sun God
I will not go into details what i believe but i did not give it a shot as Delhi was too cloudy and made more sense to see it live on television. Best place declared by Nasa to see the eclipse Taregna in Bihar India came out to be dead beat due to weather and most fascinating feeds were coming live from China. Its hard to trust Chinese media, so to make sure i do not miss the moment atleast on TV i saw some feeds from Japan and other parts of northern India.
Once the moment passed it was time to move on with the day, It was only in the evening i realized i did follow all beliefs i was briefed a day before although unintentionally and assured myself that anything bad happen now then eclipse is not to blame for it. We are to be blamed for everything we do not achieve same as we credit our education/skills/talent for everything we do achieve, but if moving away from beliefs give you the reason to blame them for your sufferings then i would say stick on to them.
Did you really follow the first tradition also??
